Benchmark and asset-specific results

InfraSure shows two types of result. Before you use a number, find out which type it is.

Two types of result

ResultWhat it representsUse it to
Benchmark estimateA result for the standard benchmark asset in the asset’s grid cell, scaled to the asset’s capacity.Compare locations, rank assets and decide what to investigate.
Asset-specific resultA more detailed analysis of the plant and its site. Some inputs can still use defaults.Investigate one asset. Check which equipment, insurance and loan assumptions it uses.

How a benchmark estimate is made

InfraSure divides the continental US into a grid of quarter-degree cells. For each cell and technology, the model calculates results for one standard benchmark asset. For solar, this is a 100 MW plant. For wind, it is a 100 MW wind farm with twenty 5 MW turbines.

An asset gets the benchmark results for its cell and technology:

  • Ratios do not change. Hazard Loss, a percentage, is the same for all plants of one technology in one cell.
  • Dollar values scale with capacity. A 240 MW plant scales the 100 MW benchmark by 2.4.

So two plants of the same technology in the same cell have the same Hazard Loss, but different dollar losses.

How an asset-specific result is made

An asset-specific result comes from a model run with the asset’s own Scenario inputs. Examples are its exact site, equipment, policy and loan terms. A benchmark estimate can be available before an asset-specific run exists. See model runs and result status.

Check the inputs as well as the label

Detailed analysis uses a default property policy and default loan settings until you enter your own. An asset-specific label does not confirm that the actual policy or financing terms are entered. See Default assumptions.

Portfolio totals use benchmark estimates

Portfolio and group summaries use benchmark estimates. You see asset-specific results for the selected asset and Scenario only. InfraSure does not add them to portfolio totals.
