Resilience measures

Purpose

The resilience model estimates how much a measure reduces physical-damage losses, and how fast the measure pays back its cost.

Inputs: the measures

Hazard / technologyMeasureModeled change
Hail / solarDynamic hail stowTilts modules before hail arrives.
Convective wind / solarSafe-stow controlChanges wind loading on trackers.
Hurricane / solarHigher-uplift modules and mountingImproves wind resistance.
Convective wind / windCertified extreme-wind turbine classChanges wind resistance.
Hurricane / windBackup-powered yaw and storm parkingChanges wind loading.
Wildfire / solarLow-fuel defensible spaceReduces modeled fire intensity.
Flood / solarRaised critical electrical equipmentReduces modeled water exposure.

Method

The model runs the same simulated events before and after a measure. So the difference in loss comes from the measure, not from a different set of events. Where it applies, the model includes the probability that a measure does not operate.

Simple payback (years) = measure cost ÷ modeled annual premium saving

Example: a $2M measure with a $0.5M annual premium saving has a simple payback of four years.

Outputs

Loss removed (Hazard Loss percentage points), VaR-95 removed, measure cost, premium saving and simple payback. See the Metrics dictionary.

At each scale

ScaleWhat runs
ScreeningFor each asset type, the reductions in EAL and Climate VaR for each measure, for the reference plant. The Resilience view shows these as “With measures” values.
Asset-specificMeasures in a what-if Scenario for one asset, with measure cost, premium saving and payback.

Assumptions

  • “With measures” applies every modeled measure at the same time.

Limitations

  • “With measures” is a modeled comparison. It does not show that a measure is installed, possible at the site or worth its cost.
  • Simple payback is a cost-recovery calculation. It is not a full investment appraisal or an insurer’s commitment to reduce the premium.

For all limitations, see Limitations.
