Screening at grid scale

Purpose

Initial analysis uses models run on a grid to provide risk and revenue estimates without waiting for detailed asset information. InfraSure assigns each asset the results for a reference plant in its grid cell and technology, then scales dollar losses to the asset's capacity. The platform labels these results Reference estimates; they are also called screening results.

This provides a starting point for understanding risk and identifying opportunities. It requires only location, technology and capacity, so the estimates do not yet reflect the asset's detailed configuration.

The grid and the reference plants

InfraSure divides the continental US into 13,085 quarter-degree cells. For each cell and technology, the models run for one reference plant: a plant with a default configuration and value.

Solar100 MW solar plant.
Wind100 MW wind farm with twenty 5 MW turbines.

Method

  1. Run the models for each reference plant. The physical-damage, revenue and InfraRisk Index models run for every cell and technology. This gives the screening results: the headline metrics.
  2. Match each asset to a cell. When you add an asset, InfraSure matches it to the nearest grid cell.
  3. Scale to the asset. Dollar losses scale by the ratio of asset capacity to reference-plant capacity. Hazard Loss percentages and Risked Revenue per MW remain unchanged.
  4. Calculate resilience reductions. For each asset type, the models calculate how much each resilience measure reduces EAL and Climate VaR for the reference plant. See Resilience measures.

Capacity scaling

Capacity factor = asset capacity / reference-plant capacity
Asset dollar loss = reference-plant dollar loss × capacity factor

For example, a 240 MW asset uses a factor of 2.4 relative to a 100 MW reference plant. If the reference plant's expected annual loss is $1M, the asset's estimate is $2.4M per year. This is an illustrative scaling example.

Hazard Loss remains the same because both expected annual loss and reference-based asset value scale by the same factor. Risked Revenue is already expressed per MW, so increasing capacity does not change that per-MW metric.

Portfolio totals

Portfolio and group totals always use screening results, so that all assets are on the same basis:

  • Hazard Loss for a portfolio is capacity-weighted.
  • Total Climate VaR adds the Climate VaR of each asset. It is not the joint P95 loss of the portfolio.

Asset-specific results never go into portfolio totals. See the Metrics dictionary.

Assumptions

  • Initial estimates use the same reference configuration for assets of one technology assigned to the same cell; actual plant configurations can differ.
  • Dollar losses and reference-based asset value scale linearly with capacity.

Limitations

  • A cell represents an area, not the exact footprint of a plant.
  • The configuration and value of the reference plant do not match every real plant.
  • Use screening results to compare and rank. For a decision about one asset, use asset-specific modeling.
